Essential Skills: How to Detect AI Truth Decay
Event Date: September 16, 2024
Event Time: 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM EDT

Join the OAB, the Ohio News Media Association, and renowned newsroom trainer Al Tompkins for an exclusive workshop designed to give journalists front-edge skills to detect artificial intelligence created images, videos and audio! The workshop will be presented in two one-hour sessions on Mon. Sept. 16 and Tues. Sept. 17 – both sessions will be from 10-11 a.m. Registration is free for all members of the OAB and ONMA. Day One - Monday, Sept. 16 - 10-11 a.m.:

  • See what is possible today: in seconds AI can produce ultra-realistic images, video and cloned audio that are disrupting elections worldwide.
  • We will, together, produce cloned audio and images and AI produced videos in real time.
  • Learn the key ways that journalists can detect fakes. We will explore the most common ways that disrupters are using AI and you will learn to look for predictable errors and tell-take signs of AI.
  • Discover the difference between artificial intelligence, machine learning and open-AI.
Day Two - Tuesday, Sept. 17th – 10-11 a.m.:
  • You will see some of the most useful ways that artificial intelligence is already being used in science, medicine and yes, journalism. I will show you how an Open AI program can sort an 80,000 line Excel spreadsheet of crime statistics and produce charts and graphics to help you understand the data.  And all of this will unfold in a period of less than two minutes, a task that would have taken hours, maybe days to do by hand.
  • You will see some of the technology that is still ahead for 2024 including emerging detection tools that are already being quietly embedded in AI-generated images, videos, audio and copy.
  • You will get a glimpse of the amazing frontier of multi-modal AI which will ingest and then analyze massive video, audio and data files and analyze the content in seconds.
  • You will see how to build a robust AI robot using just a Wordpress site and no coding skills in minutes.
These sessions are loaded with real-life examples.  Some of the technology you will see which is already public and some is on the way later this year. These sessions will be fast-moving and highly interactive.  This is NOT a “sit and be quiet Zoom session.”  It is lively, fun and full of “WOWs." Al Tompkins brings 53 years of journalism and newsroom teaching to this session. He has trained thousands of journalists worldwide about artificial intelligence’s potential and potential threats. This program is free for OAB and ONMA members, but registration is required. Please note – these sessions will NOT be recorded, so plan to join the live sessions!
