Year of Scholarship: 2020
Congratulations to 2020 OAB Kids Scholarship recipient, Samantha Rost! A 2020 graduate of Eastwood High School, Samantha plans to study Nursing at the University of Cincinnati. Her mother, Tamara Rost, is marketing director for WTOL, Toledo.
According to Samantha, the best piece of advice she ever received is “to seize every opportunity you are given. I think that it’s important to take advantage of opportunities when they are given to you because you never know when they might come around again.”
Like the rest of this year’s graduating class, the coronavirus pandemic caused Samantha to miss out on some of the traditional milestones of her senior year, but that didn’t stop her from seizing opportunities during her time at Eastwood High School, excelling in academics, athletics, and community service.
She was a consistent honor roll student and member of National Honor Society, Key Club and Senior Executive Council. Samantha earned the coach’s award in cheerleading her sophomore through senior years and earned all-league honors in softball while serving as a varsity captain for both sports. In her four years with the cheerleaders, she helped raise more than $57,000 for the American Cancer Society.
Samantha found the National Honor Society canned food drive to be particularly rewarding. Every year before winter break, the students deliver the cans to a local food pantry – much of which is used by families in need to make to make Christmas dinners.
“The most rewarding part of it all,” Samantha said, “Is just seeing the happiness and appreciation on the families’ faces. Being able to give to people who don’t have much can be an extremely rewarding thing.”
This interest in serving people is part of what draws Samantha to pursuing a nursing degree. “I think the thing that I like most about it is the personal contact and connection with patients,” Samantha said. “I enjoy talking to and interacting with people. Nursing will allow me to have a supportive job that also allows me to do the things that I love.”
This summer, Samantha plans to get a job to help pay for college and play on a travel softball team. She also looks forward to a camping trip with her friend for the 4th of July.
