WAKR-AM, Akron

A police shooting in Akron last July 4th spawned protests and walkouts over the next few weeks. More protests and civil disturbances were initiated after a grand jury declined to indict the officers. 1590/WAKR-AM broadcast continuing coverage of the events, giving listeners up to the minute information regarding safe routes around the disturbances, safety information for those wishing to attend the events, and coverage of the city and county officials’ activities and responses. Lastly, we covered the memorial, which included local pastors and other officials.

WDJQ-FM, Alliance

Each year Q92 teams up with the American Red Cross and Vitalent Blood Center to fill our area blood banks for the Annual Q92 Blood Battle. Leveraging the on-field rivalry between Canton McKinley High School and Massillon Washington High School, each team encourages their community to donate blood. Last year the event raised more than 228 viable pints of blood.

WJER-AM, Dover

Our community suffered a tragedy when a tour bus carrying the Tusky Valley marching band crashed in November, killing three students and three chaperones. WJER’s coverage began shortly after the first report came in and continues today. We hosted a live stream from the community vigil the night of the accident and continuously promoted on air and online the many ways people could assist the victims and the school district, as well as having clergy and mental health professionals address the challenges of coping with tragedy.
